He was vice president to Zachary Taylor and after his death he assumed the presidency. During his presidency he signed the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 which was authored by [[James Murray Mason]] to empower slave owners to hunt down their runaway slaves. He also joined the Know Nothings after his presidency which was a xenophobic and anti-catholic political party.
