The massacre occurred in the southernĀ Utah TerritoryĀ atĀ Mountain Meadows, and was perpetrated by theĀ MormonĀ settlers belonging to the Utah Territorial Militia (officially called theĀ Nauvoo Legion) who recruited and were aided by someĀ Southern PaiuteĀ Native Americans. The wagon train, made up mostly of families fromĀ Arkansas, was bound forĀ California, traveling on theĀ Old Spanish TrailĀ that passed through the Territory.
