Muhammad abd-al-Salam Faraj (1954 - 15th April 1982) was an Egyptian radical Islamist and the founder of al-Jihad, later known as Egyptian Islamic Jihad, a terrorist group dedicated to overthrowing the Egyptian government and replacing it with a Sharia state. In September 1981, al-Jihad member Khalid Islambouli proposed the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. Despite objections to the plan by al-Jihad members, Faraj approved the plan. On 6th October, Islambouli and other members fired at Sadat, killing him and several others. Islambouli, Faraj and three others were soon arrested, tried, convicted and executed by firing squad on 15th April 1982.
