He was previously the military head of state from 1983 to 1985 after taking power in a coup d’etat, overthrowing the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari. Although he has made numerous economic reforms, his government was accused of multiple human rights violations. He was later overthrown in a coup. Although he had attempted to run for President in the following years, he became President in 2015, attempting to amend his past.

Buhari was unable to seek reelection for a third term in 2023, thus he ended up losing the 2020 Nigerian presidential election to Bola Tinubu.
