On 12th April 2006, Atwah was holed up with six other Al-Qaeda members in the village of Naghar Kalai, Pakistan when the Pakistani government launched a surprise helicopter gunship attack, killing all seven. His death was reported by a Pakistani cabinet minister, and confirmed by the US government via DNA testing. His profile was then removed from the 22 Most Wanted Terrorists list.
