==The Massacre== On May 20, 1938, Mutsuo Toi, armed with a Browning shotgun, an axe, and a katana, cut the electricity lines at around 5:00 p.m., leaving the village in darkness. At around 1:40 a.m., he killed his grandmother by decapitating her with an axe, tied two flashlights to his head, then went house to house stabbing or shooting his victims. In a matter of 90 minutes, Toi killed 29 people (27 died instantly, 2 were seriously injured and died later) and 3 people were wounded. At dawn, Toi committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest.
