Modi was born in Vadnagar, Gujarat to a family of grocers. His family belonged to the Modh-Ghanchi-Teli oilpresing community, classified under the Indian government as an Other Backward Class. As a child, he would help his father sell tea by the railway station, opening up a tea stall with his brother by a bus terminal.
