He grew up in the rural area of Tuusula, in Jokela, living a peaceful and quiet childhood. He attended along with his older brother a local primary school, but he would move to Jokela High School. There, he excelled normally in school and he score high among his fellow students. Despite this, he was sadly target of "long term" bullying, especially during middle school. Students physically and mentally harmed him by throwing him into halls and calling names. === Change in behavior === School documents report that a lot of students were annoyed by his behavior, since he would threatened them several times and he would say to them that they will die in a "white revolution". He expressed tons of times worldviews of a radical militant who would take inspiration from both the far-right and far-left. During this period, he changed his political views, moving from Communism to Nazism, but he said that he wasn't supporting any these two ideologies and said that he was just studying them. Also, he experienced in his teens severe anxiety and depression, adding to extreme thoughts even unstable emotions too. === Troubled Mental Health === On the autumn of 2006, his parents started to worry about his mental health and tried to refer him to a clinical psychologist to have a confirmation of the problems his mental health. After being examined by a psychologist, his depression and anxiety started to become more mild. He started taking SSRIS, but he would often abuse his prescription and would miss days or weeks of his medication at a time. His irregular and undiscipline take of medicines deteriorated his mental health, isolating himself from others even more. This isolation led him to stay for more time on his computer, becoming fascinated by dark and violent content on the Internet such like videos of school shooting and of terroristic attacks. === Career on YouTube === On the 15th of March, 2007, he created his first channel: NaturalSelector89. He would spread his radical views through his videos which consisted in reuplouding footage of sensitive events and idolizing violent killers, criticizing religion or modern politics and discuss his belief in "social darwinism", gathering both attention and controversy. On the pltaform, he would have a little drama with famous youtuber TheAmazingAtheist who criticized his opinions and deconstucted them. During summer 2007, he had a relationship with a German girl who was going under the username of "tanascheel". However, their relationship didn't last long, since tanascheel left him to stay with a guy named "Steve" she met online. This greatly afflicted Auvinen and he felt great anger towards his ex-girlfriend. On the 19th October 2007, his channel was ultimately terminated for violating the guidelines of YouTube, but he created another account called "sturmgeist89" in which he would post the same type of videos he did before, but he would also upload videos of him playing videogames like "Codename: 47" and other violent videogames. By autumn 2007, he became more outspoken with his views and his opinions became even more radical while continuing to isolate himself furthermore. === Owning a gun === [[File:Auvinen training.jpg|left|thumb|255x255px|Pekka-Eric Auvinen training with his gun in the woods while recording his video "Just Testing My Gun" uploaded on the 5th November 2007.]] On the 31st August of 2007, he became a registered member of the Helsinki Shooting Club and attended a one-hour session. On the mid-October 2007, after a succesful application, he purchased a SIG Mosquito .22 calibre semi automatic pistol. On the 2nd November 2007, he purchased over 500 rounds of ammunition for his firearm. During this period, Auvinen was becoming more outspoken with his opinions and more violent in his behavior. This didn't went unnoticed, since TheAmazingAtheist himself posted a video regarding people who admired Columbine killers, saying that they are dangerous and in his list of names there were also Auvinen's YouTube username. === Relationship with Vaula === Also, Auvinen had a friendship with a woman called Vaula Kuuluvainen that he met through IRC Galleria, a finnish social networking social media, and met her in a group char called "Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold". Both of them admired school shooters and ,on the same day he posted his video depicting him training with his gun, he had a lenghty conversation with her and told her about his desire of doing a school shooting in a very vague way and told her that he had a plan to make it. The next day, they had another conversation with each other, but during the conversation, Auvinen started actin even more strange, since his sentences were shorter than the usual ones and was nervous. During this time, he apologized to his ex-girlfriend for his behavior and to TheAmazingAtheist for all the agressive messages he sended to him. === Writing his manifesto === On the 6th November 2007, he had written a manifesto and other files written in both English and Finnish on a file package along with pictures of him, his firearm, his shirt, Jokela High School and one undisclosed music file published on Rapidshare.com. On that file, he expressed his worldviews referring to Plato, Friedrich Nietzsche and Theodore John Kaczynski. === The Jokela High School Massacre === At 8:37 a.m., Auvinen missed his first class and was surfing on the Internet. At 9:33 a.m., he uploaded his final video called "Jokela High School Massacre - 11/7/2007". The video shows an image of Jokela High School, before fading to two red photos of Auvinen with his gun. The song "Stray Bullet" by KMFDM is playing in the background throughout the video. Pekka Eric Auvinen entered Jokela High School on November 7th, 2007 at 11:40 am., armed with a SIG Mosquito .22 calibre semi automatic pistol. After having missed his first scheduled class, Auvinen began the deadly massacre on the first floor in the school's main hallway. At approximately 11:42 in the same hallway, Auvinen encountered and killed a student before moving on to the lavatories and shooting another two students. Having heard the gunshots, the school nurse contacted emergency services. Unfortunately, her actions did not go unnoticed and she was chased and murdered by the perpetrator soon after another student was killed outside of the lavatories. Another student was also fatally shot during this altercation. After being informed of the shooting by another teacher, head teacher Helena Kalmi instructed Jokela students via PA system to barricade and stay put inside of classrooms. Auvinen reacted to this by firing sporadically a total of 53 times whilst shouting. During this time, the shooter encountered the mother of a student attending the high school but ultimately spared her. Afterwards, Pekka Eric Auvinen attempted to invade a classroom but was unable to and instead shot his weapon three times underneath the door, hitting a student in the toe. Auvinen continued his rampage by trekking to the second floor of the school, where he encountered two students sitting together on a bench. One of the students was fatally shot whilst the other escaped unscathed. Auvinen briefly ceased fire and instead began pouring two-stroke engine fuel on the walls and floors of the corridor. Luckily, he was unsuccessful with his intentions of igniting said fuel. After this failed attempt, Auvinen returned to the first floor of the school where he had began his rampage and made his way to the canteen. Precautions were made, however, and the sliding glass doors that served as an entrance to the canteen were locked. Auvinen shot through the glass after demanding to be let in and receiving no response. By this time, everyone hidden inside had safely escaped to the other side of the canteen and were able to hide in rooms behind the kitchen. Everyone who previously resided in the canteen survived the shooting entirely unscathed. Meanwhile, Helena Kalmi left the interior of the school alongside the high school's education welfare officer. While talking on the phone and waiting outside of the building, Kalmi encountered a cursing Auvinen, who had also emerged from the building. After attempting to persuade the gunman to surrender, Kalmi was shot by Auvinen a total of seven times, fatally wounding her. During this time, the education officer who had previously accompanied Kalmi guided rescue vehicles who were arriving at the school. After his encounter with Helena, Auvinen reentered the school through the first floor and ventured around the vicinity, knocking at classroom doors before successfully entering a comprehensive-school classroom that was occupied at the time. Luckily, everyone inside of the classroom was spared as Auvinen had apparently only entered the classroom to bark orders at the students, instructing them to vandalize and demolish school property. During this time, first responding police officers and paramedics who had arrived at the school converged together at the area of the inner court. Auvinen spotted them from inside of the school and attempted to shoot at them through the window but his bullets failed to puncture the glass. At 12:04, he trekked to the school's main entrance where he encountered an unspecified number of police officers. Similarly to Kalmi, the officers tried to converse with Auvinen but were fired at a total of two times by the gunman. None one was injured during this encounter. Afterward, he walked into the lavatory next to the canteen and threw his jacket and bag on the floor and shot himself in the head, ending the shooting at 12:04 a.m. ==== Victims ==== List of people who were killed by Auvinen during the school shooting: * Sameli Nurmi, 17 * Ville Heinonen, 16 * Mikko Hiltunen, 17 * Ari Palsanen, 18 * Sirkka Kaarakka, 43 * Hanna Kinnunun, 25 * Mika Pulkkinen, 17 * Helena Kalmi, 61 === Death === Auvinen was found and taken to the Töölö campus of Helsinki University Central Hospital at 14:45, where he died at 10:15 p.m. from the gunshot wound.
