It became infamous due to the large number of users of the site (over 215,000 at one count) and the controversial means used by law enforcement to track down users of the site.

At the peak of Playpen's operation, the site hosted over 23,000 explicit images and videos of children ranging from teenagers to infants. However, after six months the site's founder Steven Chase accidently revealed his IP address and was captured by the FBI. The FBI then controversially allowed the site to continue operating for two weeks while they used a hacking tool to find the IP addresses of the pedophiles using the site. Playpen was taken offline in March 2015, and Chase was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
