At the time of the murder, an innocent man named Stefan Kiszko was wrongfully convicted based on a coerced confession and served 16 years in prison before his conviction was overturned in 1992. Castree was convicted of the murder in 2006 based on DNA evidence and eventually sentenced to life imprisonment without the opportunity for parole until 2036. ==Biography== Castree was born in Rochdale, Manchester, in 1953. He had an unhappy marriage and was physically and verbally abusive towards his wife. A week before Lesley Molseed's murder his wife gave birth to an illegitimate son from an affair with another man, which is believed to have been a trigger for the crime. On 5 October 1975 Lesley Molseed was abducted while running an errand for her mother. Three days later her body was found dumped in a layby by the M62 in Yorkshire. She had been raped and then stabbed 12 times, once through the heart, and Β£1 had been stolen from her. An intellectually disabled man named Stefan Kiszko was suspected by the police because of his unusual behaviour and was interrogated for three days, denied access to a lawyer, not informed of his right to remain silent and eventually bullied into confessing under the false promise of being allowed to go home. He was convicted of Molseed's murder despite retracting his confession; evidence showing that the semen found on Molseed's body was not his was suppressed by the police. Kiszko was imprisoned for 16 years until the case was finally re-opened when experts proved that Kiszko was impotent and so could not have raped Molseed, and a witness was found who said that he had told police he saw Kiszko in Halifax on the day of Molseed's disappearance but had been ignored. Kiszko's conviction was overturned in 1992 and he died 22 months later. The now-unsolved Molseed case was re-opened in 1999. Most of the physical evidence had been destroyed after Kiszko's conviction as it was believed to be unnecessary with the supposed killer in jail; however, strips of adhesive tape that had been used to remove semen samples from Molseed's clothing were still in existence. Scientists were able to extract DNA from sperm heads still on the adhesive tape, but no arrests were made as Castree's DNA was not in the National DNA Database at the time. On 1 October 2005, Castree was arrested for sexually assaulting a child. A DNA sample was taken and, when entered into the National DNA Database, turned up an exact match for the sample from Molseed's underwear. Castree was subsequently charged with the murder of Lesley Molseed, pleading not guilty. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with no possibility for release for 30 years, meaning he cannot be released until at least 2036.
