Ross William Ulbricht (March 27th, 1984 - ) is a former dark net market operator, best known for being convicted of creating and running the Silk Road website until his arrest. He was known under the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts".
Silk Road was founded in 2011 by Ulbricht, and accounts capable of selling on the website were sold at auction. The website had sold many items such as, but not limited to illicit drugs (primarily), jewelry, collectibles, and electronics. Ulbricht ultimately fell when he instructed an undercover police officer to assault someone. Ulbricht was convicted of money laundering, computer hacking, conspiracy to traffic fraudulent identity documents, and conspiracy to traffic narcotics in February 2015. He is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
