===Al-Qaeda=== The origins of al-Qaeda can be traced to 1979 when theĀ Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Osama bin Laden travelled toĀ AfghanistanĀ and helped to organize ArabĀ mujahideenĀ to resist theĀ Soviets.Ā Under the guidance ofĀ [[Ayman al-Zawahiri]], bin Laden became more radical.Ā In 1996, bin Laden issued his firstĀ ''fatwÄ'', calling for American soldiers to leaveĀ Saudi Arabia. In a secondĀ ''fatwÄ''Ā in 1998, bin Laden outlined his objections toĀ American foreign policyĀ with respect toĀ Israel, as well as the continued presence of American troops in Saudi Arabia after theĀ Gulf War.Ā Bin Laden used Islamic texts to exhort Muslims to attack Americans until the stated grievances were reversed.Ā Muslim legal scholarsĀ "have throughout Islamic history unanimously agreed that theĀ jihadĀ is an individual duty if the enemy destroys the Muslim countries", according to bin Laden.
