== Trial ==
Azuma was sentenced to juvenile detention on October 13<sup>th</sup>, 1997, due to the fact that he was only 14 years old, and was released in January 2005.

In 2000, Japan lowered the age for criminal responsibility from 16 to 14. However, due to another murder case where a 11-year-old murdered her 12-year-old classmate in 2004, there has been some discussion for the need for further revision
