Well he was an incredibly brave and patrotic man, who fought for his country in some of the darkest days. He never shot down a man outside of battle, and never went out of his way to kill anyone if there wasn't a need. He was beloved by his companions, and greatly respected and admired by his opponents, and vice versa.
