~ Thomas Mair in court |
Thomas Alexander Mair is a British far-right murderer and prison inmate. He believes that the mainstream media and political left are the cause of the world's problems, and is a supporter of apartheid, the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Party, the English Defense League and the BNP. In 2016, he targeted MP (member of parliament, not military police) Jo Cox due to her support of immigration and opposition to Brexit. On June 17, Cox was going to meet constituents when Mair intercepted her and, while shouting nationalistic, pro-Brexit slogans, shot her three times with a hunting rifle and stabbed her fifteen times. Bystander Bernard Carter-Kenny rushed to help Cox but Mair stabbed him and ran away. A second man chased Mair, and although he managed to get away, the man was able to provide a detailed description to police. Mair was arrested a mile from the scene, and charged with murder, grievous bodily harm (Carter-Kenny), unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a knife. On 23 November, Mair was found guilty on all counts and received a whole-life term, meaning he will never be eligible for parole and will spend the rest of his life in jail.
