Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson (born July 27, 1992) known professionally as Tory Lanez, is an Canadian rapper and singer. Since 2020, he has received significant media attention for allegedly shooting American rapper Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020. He has continued to deny the allegations. In December 2022, Lanez was found guilty of charges related to the shooting and sent to prison.
Previously in March 2016, Lanez also incited a riot during a concert in Midland, Texas, forcing police to shut it down.
Shooting of Megan Thee Stallion edit
On July 11, 2020, Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez, who had recently bonded, attended a party at Kylie Jenner's house. They left in a car with Lanez's driver and Megan's friend Kelsey Harris. As they were driving, an argument broke out between Megan and Lanez about their romantic relationships and musical careers. Harris was also involved in the argument. After Megan got out of the car, Lanez shouted "Dance, bitch!" and fired a pistol several times at her, hitting both of her feet. Megan was taken to the hospital; she initially reported she injured her feet from stepping on broken glass to protect Lanez. Hours after the shooting, Lanez apologized to Megan via text message and offered her a million dollars in return for her to keep quiet about the shooting. On July 12, he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon in his vehicle.
Lanez and his team have since denied the allegations and accused Megan of framing him. In September 2020, Lanez released his album Daystar, on which he repeatedly addresses the shooting and denies his guilt.
Lanez was officially charged in October 2020, with felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, personal use of a firearm, and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, as well as facing an allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury.
In April 2022, Lanez violated a protection order relating to the case. He was taken to jail but posted bail and was released shortly after.
On December 23, 2022, Lanez was convicted of three felony charges in relation to the shooting: assault with a semiautomatic handgun, carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He faces a maximum of 22 years in prison and possible deportation to Canada.
