The video went viral. All four officers were fired the day after the incident, and many people made calls for the officers to be charged with criminal homicide.

On June 3<sup>rd</sup>, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison charged Thao, Kueng, and Lane with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

On February 15, 2022, Thao testified in his own defence. He claimed his main role at the scene was "crowd control" and that he had "no idea" George Floyd was in medical distress. On February 24 2022 he was convicted of violating Floyd's civil rights and was sentenced to 3.5 years on July 27.
