He graduated from the three courses of the Faculty of Law of the University of Kaunas and the Kaunas Military School. Until 1940, he served in the Lithuanian army as a cultural worker. In the spring of 1942 he was drafted by the Bessonovsky military commissariat of the Penza region. He graduated from the accelerated course of the Penza Artillery School and was enrolled in the 16th Infantry Division, formed from the inhabitants of Lithuania. The commander of a foot reconnaissance platoon of the 156th Infantry Regiment (16th Infantry Division, 48th Army, Central Front) Lieutenant Bernotenas on June 25, 1943 during reconnaissance in battle in the area of vil. Nikitovka (Sverdlovsk district of the Oryol region) broke into the enemy’s location and captured two prisoners. In subsequent battles he was wounded. 7 days without food and water made his way to the location of the regiment. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 4, 1944, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (Gold Star medal No. 3662). He became the first Lithuanian to be awarded this title. After the war he lived in Vilnius. He worked in the republican library. He died after a serious illness, was buried in the Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius.
