Vanessa taught at Sharyland North Middle School in McAllen, Texas before beginning her job at Sharyland Pioneer High School during the summer of 2017. Shortly afterwards, Vanessa turned villainous by engaging in a relationship with a 14-year-old student, which (according to reports) continued on for months. The student, known on court documents by the pseudonym "Michael", reported Vanessa's actions to the police in January 2018, and it was a month later that Vanessa was arrested.

She was arraigned on February 13, 2018, and released on $10,000 bond.
