Vassili Poyarkov was a Russian explorer in the fifteenth century. Sent to explore the land between the Stanovoy Mountains and the Amur River, which was controlled by China, he was so brutal towards the natives that his own crew hated him. He was hostile and violent towards the natives when trying to get supplies from them, leading to him and his crew being forced to survive on a diet of stolen food, tree bark and natives who they captured, killed and ate. He was so hated, in fact, that on getting back to Russia he was arrested and sent to Moscow to be tried for his crimes, with no record of his fate or the outcome of the trial.
