He was responsible for overseeing [[The Holodomor]] in Ukraine, and later became head of the far east branch of the NKVD following the execution of his predecessor [[Terenty Deribas]]. On July 7<sup>th</sup>, 1937, [[Stalin]], who sought to have him removed from his position as part of the [[Great Purge]], had [[Genrikh Lyushkov]] order Balitsky's arrest. He was sentenced to death and shot on his 45<sup>th</sup> birthday. | ||
