Whaling is the hunting of whales for their meat and blubber. Whaling is particularly controversial because of the killing process involved. It also threatens all species of whales in general due to the threatened status of many whale species, such blue whales and north atlantic right whales. Therefore, whaling can be seen as a form of [[Cruelty to animals|animal cruelty]]. While whaling might have been necessary for gaining resources in prehistory, modern technology has allowed whaling to no longer be of use. In most countries across the world, whaling is officially and completely illegal. However, in most countries, such as Norway, Denmark, and Japan, whaling is still legal, under the guise of scientific research, though the whaling industry in those countries is said to be declining.
