She had worked with Selena by running her fan club and managing her clothing boutiques after resigning from her job as a nurse, but soon it was discovered that Yolanda was embezzling money from the fans and the boutiques. Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., fired Yolanda, but Selena tried to keep on good terms with her. Friends and family of Selena worried about Yolanda since she seemed too obsessed with Selena. Yolanda made up many stories on why she couldn't return the money, even at one point, claimed that she was “[[False rape allegations|raped]]” in Mexico.
