On March 31, 1995, Selena confronted Yolanda at the Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi. She demanded the financial papers when she finally realized Yolanda's deception when she dumped out Yolanda's purse a gun fell out and Yolanda grabbed it and when she attempted to give the friendship ring back. Selena tried to run away, only to be shot once in the lower right shoulder, severing her artery. Yolanda chased after her and called her a "bitch" before she returned to her room. Selena made it to the lobby and collapsed from blood loss, telling the workers who had shot her, and she was later pronounced dead on her arrival to the hospital at 1:05 pm. Yolanda tried to flee the scene only to be stopped by a passing police cruiser, and a 9-hour stand-off ensued with Yolanda threatening to kill herself before she surrendered to the police.
 
Yolanda Saldívar pleaded not guilty, saying the shooting was accidental. She was found guilty of the murder of Selena on October 23, 1995, and was sentenced to life in prison and is eligible for parole in March of 2025.
