He had various nicknames, including "General Three-Don't-Knows" (because he didn't know how many concubines he had, how many soldiers he had and how rich he was) and "Dogmeat General" (because he enjoyed playing the Chinese gambling game known as "dogmeat"). ==Biography== Zhang Zongchang was a general of Manchurian warlord Zhang Zuolin. He was known as one of the more capable warlords in China at the time, even utilising thousands of former members of the defunct Russian [[White Army]] to expand his troops. He was also one of the first Chinese generals to allow women into the army on a large scale, recruiting an entire auxiliary regiment which consisted only of women. Despite this Zhang was loathed by many for his brutality, as his campaigns involved the slaughter of many civilians and prisoners. Zhang himself was known to enjoy personally splitting the heads of prisoners of war with his sword, a practice he referred to as "splitting melons". He also hanged dissenters from telephone poles and forced captured women into his harem. Zhang, like many Chinese generals at the time, was involved in the opium trade. The presence of opium in his faction grew to the point that they became reliant on the drug. During one incident Zhang and some of his generals got into an argument over the proceeds of an opium deal, leading to a shootout which left three dead. During a campaign against the [[Kuomintang]], Zhang's army was defeated and destroyed and he fled to Japan. He attempted to launch an invasion with backing from the Japanese government to retake his territory from the Kuomintang with the help of two fellow warlords. The campaign lead to mass destruction and thousands of civilian casualties, but was eventually defeated and Zhang fled back to Japan. While living in Beppu, Japan, Zhang shot and killed the exiled Prince Xiankai after he slept with one of Zhang's concubines. Zhang was convicted of [[murder]] but only received a small fine. While visiting Shangdong in 1932 he was assassinated by the nephew of one of his many victims. At the time it was believed that the Kuomintang had arranged his murder to eliminate a potential threat.
