* September 18 - The [[Fugitive Slave Act of 1850|Fugitive Slave Act]], written by Senator [[James Murray Mason]], is signed into law by President [[Millard Fillmore]]. The Act mandates that all escaped slaves, upon capture, are to be returned to the slaver and that officials and citizens of free states have to cooperate.
