- December 2 - President Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte becomes Napoleon III, Emperor of the French. The Second French Empire is, at the same time, established, following a referendum in November which asked voters if they approved of the French Empire's reestablishment. With a 79.8% turnout, 96.8% of voters approved it.
