- February 2 - The Mexican-American War ends with a United States victory. Mexico secedes most of its territories of Alta California, per the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
- December 10 - Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte is elected the first President of France, months after the French Revolution of 1848 which overthrew King Louis Philippe I.
- December 20 - President Bonaparte takes his oath of office in front of the French National Assembly as the first and only president of the Second French Republic.
