  • January 11 - New Zealand Wars: the Flagstaff War ends in a stalemate. On the British side, 82 are killed and 164 are wounded. On the Māori side, 60-94 are killed and 80-148 are wounded.
  • April 25 - The Mexican-American War begins with an attack on a 70-man U.S. patrol, also known as the Thornton Affair. 52 American soldiers are captured and 11 are killed.
  • May 25 - Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, with the help of his doctor and the assistance of his other friends on the other side, after almost 6 years of his life sentence, disguises himself as a laborer carrying lumber, and walks out of prison. A month later, his father, Louis, dies, thus making him the heir of the Bonaparte dynasty.
