{{Yearnav}} == Events == * January 6 - [[Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte|French Emperor Napoleon III]]'s invasion of Mexico begins when his forces, as well as British and Spanish forces, arrive in Veracruz, shortly after Spanish forces took control of the port, in December of 1861, therefore beginning the Second Franco-Mexican War, more commonly known as the Second French Intervention in Mexico. * April 9 - Second French Intervention in Mexico - Agreements between the Second French Empire, the United Kingdom, and Spain break down, when France makes it increasingly clear of its intention to invade Mexico and interfere in its government in violation of previous treaties. As a result, the British inform the Mexican government of their intentions to leave the country, and withdraw from the war, and the British settle their claims, after an arrangement is made. Spain withdraws as well. * September 22 - President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, which formally mandates the freedom of African-Americans from [[slavery]] in the Southern United States, effective January 1, 1863. == Births == === Villain births === * January 22 - [[Vito Cascioferro]]
