* December 1 - The first [[Canadian Indian residential school system|Canadian Indian boarding school]], Battleford Industrial School, is opened in Battleford, Saskatchewan. The school and the larger residential system that it is apart of is implemented as part of Prime Minister [[John A. Macdonald]]'s efforts to assimilate the First Nations peoples into Canadian society.
