- March 4 - Former Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens dies four months into his term as the 50th Governor of Georgia.
- December 1 - The first Canadian Indian boarding school, Battleford Industrial School, is opened in Battleford, Saskatchewan. The school and the larger residential system that it is apart of is implemented as part of Prime Minister John A. Macdonald's efforts to assimilate the First Nations peoples into Canadian society.
