- April 19 to 21 - The first Kishinev pogrom, beginning on Easter Day, takes place in Kishinev, capital of the Bessarabia Governorate of the Russian Empire. At least 47 Jews are killed and others injured during mob rioting encouraged by blood libel articles in the press and led by priests; no attempt is made by police or military to intervene until the third day.
- June 10 to 11 - The May Coup: King Alexander I of Serbia and his wife, Queen Draga, are assassinated inside the Serbian Royal Palace in Belgrade by Dragutin Dimitrijević of the Black Hand.
- November 17 - The Bolshevik movement is launched by Vladimir Lenin.
