* May 31 - The Slender Man stabbing: [[Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier]] lure their best friend, 12-year old Payton Leutner, into the woods of Waukesha, Wisconsin and stab her 19 times. Leutner manages to survive the attack.

* August 3 to 8 - [[Sinjar Massacre]]: [[The Islamic State|ISIL]] captures the city of Sinjar in Iraq. Over the course of five days, Yazidis in Sinjar are killed en masse, with an estimated 5,000 being killed. The massacre marks the beginning of ISIL's campaign of [[genocide]] against the Yazidis.
* August 7 - The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) finds both [[Nuon Chea]] and [[Khieu Samphan]] guilty of [[crimes against humanity]] committed during the [[Khmer Rouge]] regime and sentences them both to life in prison.
