On 16 October 2020, Paty, who had recently showed an image of the prophet Muhammad in his classroom during a class on freedom of expression, was tracked to his workplace by Anzorov. As Paty left, Anzorov approached him and hacked at him with a cleaver while screaming "Allahu Akbar". He eventually decapitated Paty and took a photo of his severed head, posting it on Twitter. When confronted by the police about 600 metres from the scene, Anzorov shot at the police with an air rifle and tried to stab them with a knife. He was then shot nine times and killed by the officers in response.
