These private server games are being run by people who aren't really in a position or qualified to do so. It's all good and well to have a community that you've built, but when you get to a certain size there's a point where you have to have to employ a degree of professionalism.

Adeyori Adebowale, better known online as Riley or formerly, Anthony Falcon or Waterkid, is a former member of the Club Penguin private server community, originating from London, United Kingdom. He is best known for creating and owning Club Penguin Online,[2] a delisted Club Penguin private server notorious for its criminal history, which includes incidents of hacking and child pornography. He also used to own a less popular CP private server named Virtual Penguin.[3]

Club Penguin Online edit

Starting from the discontinuation of the original Club Penguin in March 2017, countless CP private servers (CPPS for short) have started to spawn in order to preserve the game. One of the examples is Club Penguin Online, run by Adebowale under his username Riley and starting in January 4, 2018. The game was programmed by Timmy, who was claimed by Riley to be "the real owner of CPO", although Riley actually owns the its website domain. With the Covid-19 pandemic spreading worldwide in 2020, CPO earned a sudden massive growth of the userbase, with 7 million players joining the game that year.

Allegations against Riley used to do not be popular during the days of him hosting Virtual Penguin and until April of 2020. They were generally being limited to the CPPS community and Reddit posts which went ignored for months, until Joey Hues posted videos about the allegations which ultimately had gone widespread and contributed to Disney taking actions against Riley and his game in short time of one month later. Those allegations included:

CPO's main point of criticism was its lack of moderation, allowing slurs, swear words and sexual roleplaying, especially for a private server of a family-friendly game. It had also been subject of the leakages of emails, passwords and IP addresses of every account by the moderators, causing others' accounts that use the same password as their CPO account to be hacked by them in turn, which Riley denied about.[4]

Riley allegedly groomed children online, mainly girls, with his main goals being to date and receive pictures of their nudes in order to promote them administratorship in his private server, then blackmail their families afterwards.

As an attempt to monopolize the CPPS craze, he used anti-competitive tactics towards other CPPSs of which he sees them as a "threat" to his game, such as hacking, raiding or performing DDoS attacks against them. One infamous example is when he raided, doxxed and harassed the staff of a server created in 2019 and designed to be superior to CPO, which led to its closure.[5]

In May 2019, he used the Marvel items from another private server named Super Club Penguin (which he hacked two years prior) for his own game's Marvel party.

The game also violated several other laws, being the General Data Protection Regulation, for disallowing its users from deleting their accounts, and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act for not prompting parental consents upon signing up. When an anonymous user sent the CPO team a message about the game violating the GDPR, they claimed that they do not delete accounts "because it would allow rule breakers to sign up again", trying to justify regarding of the game's refusal to terminate accounts and failing to realize that it was against the GDPR.[6]

He also tried to silence all criticism against him, and trying to manipulate his fanbase on few occasions, such as making it think that he is innocent and spread lies about anyone who were against him.

Harassment of Joey Hues edit

Joey Hues met Riley back in 2015, whom he used to collaborate with to moderate Virtual Penguin then CPO. He stated to have defended Riley against "rumors" of pedophilia as he was afraid of being slandered by Riley, until he was banned from the game, causing him to immediately turn against him.

In April of 2020, he became known for exposing Riley along with his private server for his severe acts towards consumers and staff members on a now-privated YouTube video, which was then deleted by a false copyright claim from Riley, alongside with creating a petition for Disney to shut down CPO on Change.org, which received 13,786 supporters before being concluded.[7] After the video surfaced, Riley also censored the name Joey Hues and any comment regarding the allegations from his game. Hues also explained that Riley was unexperienced in game development, and instead advertised and marketed for the game.[8]

From then, Riley started to attack Hues over his documents exposing his true colors, attempting to slander him by creating a Discord server full of fake evidences against him which were all invalidated by Hues himself. He then threatened him to doxx people who expressed negative opinions towards him.[9] Finally, he and his gang hired a hitman in an attempt to murder not only Hues, but also a Twitter user named CPPSArmy, who posted tweets against CPO. The murders did not occur, however.[10][11]

Shutdown of Club Penguin Online and Arrest edit

On May 15, 2020, Disney ordered a cease and desist against Club Penguin Online, closing down the game that same day. The company also disclosed the following message regarding the illegal activities and the protection of the game:

Child safety is a top priority for the Walt Disney Company and we are appalled by the allegations of criminal activity and abhorrent behaviour on this unauthorised website that is illegally using the Club Penguin brand and characters for its own purposes.
We continue to enforce our rights against this, and other, unauthorised uses of the Club Penguin game.

Later, Riley was reportedly arrested with convictions of child pornography and copyright infringement,[2][12] with his Twitter account being deleted alongside. He was eventually granted bail pending further inquiries, according to detectives,[1] and his current whereabouts are unknown.

Trivia edit

  • According to himself, his nickname, Riley, is a reference to Riley Freeman, a character from The Boondocks.
  • His exact birth date is unknown, although a researcher said he was probably at least 25 years old at the time the messages were sent.[13].
