Beatrice Munyenyezi is a Rwandan woman who was convicted of lying to American officials about her role in the Rwandan Genocide, as well as lying to the ICC about her husband's involvement. An ethnic Hutu, she was born in Butare.
She married a Hutu named Arsene Shalom Ntahobali, the son of future government minister Pauline Nyiramasuhuko. Ntahobali was the leader of the Interahamwe in Butare.
When the Rwandan Genocide was occurring following the assassination of Juvénal Habyarimana, a roadblock was set up and staffed by Nyiramasuhuko and Ntahobali to identify and arrest Tutsis, the ethnic group that was the target of the genocide. Munyenyezi was one of the people who staffed the roadblock. She looked at people's identity cards to find out what their racial background was and had them arrested if they were Tutsi. They would then be executed.
Munyenyezi fled after the end of the genocide and gained asylum in America by claiming she was being persecuted in Rwanda, when in fact she had been responsible for persecution. She later appeared at the ICC as a defence witness for her husband and mother-in-law, falsely telling the court that nobody was killed at the roadblock. She failed and they were sentenced to life in prison, with the court deciding that she had been a perpetrator of the genocide and was lying to them.
The US realised that Munyenyezi had lied at her asylum hearing and stripped away her citizenship. She received ten years in prison for perjury.
