Pugo Boriss (Boris Pùgo) 19 February 1937Kalinin (now Tver) 22.08.1991Moscow, State activist of the Latvian SSR and USSR. Colonel General (1991). Member of the CPSU (1963). 1960 graduated from Riga Polytechnic Institute. 1960 Engineer at Riga Electric Machine Factory, Secretary of the Komsomol Committee. From 1961 to 1977 he worked as a Communist and Party worker in Riga and Moscow. 1977-80 Deputy Chairman of the KGB of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Latvia, 1980-84 Chairman. 1984-88 Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia I. 1988-91 Chairman of the Party Control Committee of the CPSU Central Committee. 1990-91 Minister of the Interior of the USSR. 1976-91 Member of the Central Committee of the Latvian Communist Party, 1986-91 Member of the Central Committee of the CPSU. Took part in organizing the August Putsch in Moscow (1991), and was a member of the State Committee on State of Emergency in the USSR (the so-called GKPP). After the collapse of Puch, he committed suicide.
