Carl Phillip Herold (1981-1982 - November 4, 2014), also known online as CarlH, was an American man who was known on Reddit and YouTube for his educational programming tutorials. However, in 2013, he, along with his romantic partner Charles Dunnavant, were arrested for filming videos depicting the sexual abuse of Carl's own son and then distributing them online. In 2014, Carl committed suicide by hanging himself in his jail cell.
Online career edit
On September 25th, 2009, Carl created a community on Reddit called "r/carlhprogramming". There, Carl, going by the handle "CarlH", would teach anyone programming from beginner level to advanced lessons. He also started a YouTube channel on July 7th, 2012, where he would also upload tutorials on programming. Carl would gain a reputation as a helpful and nice guy, who was both informative and passionate about teaching and programming, even being named "Redditor of the Day" on July 26th, 2012.
Arrest edit
In November of 2013, Carl was arrested for multiple counts of producing and distributing child pornography of his own son. He also responsible for holding his son captive for eight months with no outside interaction or schooling. It was also revealed that Carl had a partner named Charles Dunnavant, who was also arrested due to him taking part in the acts as well. Carl and Charles were placed on a $150,000 bond, which quickly went up to $1,000,000 due to natural of their crimes and how they were deemed a threat to society. Carl denied the allegations against him, and, during several hearings, he was stated as being positive and in high-spirits that he would win his case. It was learned that the abuse began in August of 2011 and that the reason he was discovered due to the pictures of his son being found online, which the FBI saw and then contacted Huntsville, Alabama law enforcement, and the investigation from this led to his arrest. Carl was faced 18 counts in multiple states.
Suicide edit
On November 4th, 2014, while the middle of an extradition to New York, Carl was found hanged in his jail cell. With his death, the case against him stalled and only cemented his guilt in the eyes of most of the public. Charles Dunnavant was eventually sentenced to 56 years in prison.
2017 Reddit account hacking edit
In 2017, Carl's Reddit account was hacked, and the hacker claimed that he was Carl and that he was still alive. However, this has been debunked.
