Charles Hayes
Charles Hayes (1678 – 1760) was a British mathematician, geographer, author and chronologist who wrote Treatise on Fluxions, or an Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy, The Moon, a Philosophical Dialogue and Series of Kings of Argos and of Emperors of China from Fohi to Jesus Christ, among other things.
Having travelled to Africa at least once, Hayes was annually elected as sub-governor of the Royal African Company, a trading company that made most of its money from slaves. In this capacity, one of the highest executive positions, he was responsible for shipping thousands of slaves to North America and the Caribbean. He settled down in Kent after the RAC disbanded in 1752, and eventually died of natural causes on 18 December 1760.
