Mature David Carrick (born January 1975) is a British former police officer who raped at least 12 women a total of 24 times over an 18-year period. He is believed to be one of Britain's worst modern-day sex offenders (albeit nowhere near as prolific as others such as Reynhard Sinaga). ==Biography== Carrick joined the Metropolitan Police in 2001 after a career with the British Army. Vetting procedures found that he had previously been accused of harassing his ex-girlfriend and breaking into her house but despite this he was still allowed to join the force. The following year he was investigated for committing domestic abuse and sexual assault against his former partner but no action was taken. Despite five complaints against him from 2002 - 2008, including allegations of excessive force, he was able to pass checks to become a firearms officer in 2009 and later transferred to the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Team. Colleagues nicknamed him "Bastard Dave" due to his tendency towards anger and cruelty. Between 2003 and 2020, Carrick exploited his position on the police force to abuse women. He would meet women via the dating apps Badoo and Tinder and gain their trust using his position on the police force before developing abusive relationships with them. Carrick's abuse relied on isolation and humiliation, with his methods including restraining his victims with police-issue handcuffs, threatening them with his gun, beating them with his belt, locking them in the cupboard under the stairs (one investigator said of this cupboard "I've seen bigger dog crates") and urinating in their mouths. He would also roughly rape them both anally and orally, calling them "slaves" and "whores". Other women were not raped, but were isolated and controlled by Carrick, who would ban them from talking to other men or even their families, control what they wore and what they ate, and sometimes even ban them from eating for periods of time. He would often brag to his victims that they would never be believed as he was a respected police officer who had even met the Prime Minister, telling one woman that he knew how to kill her without leaving any evidence if she tried to leave him. In October 2021, one of Carrick's victims reported him to police in Hertfordshire accusing him of raping her on a Tinder date the previous year. Carrick was arrested and suspended from the Metropolitan Police. He denied the charge, but as a defendant in the case his name was made public, resulting in other victims coming forward. Carrick was ultimately charged with 49 acts of violence against women, including 24 counts of rape. He pled guilty to all charges in December 2022 and January 2023 and was remanded in custody to await sentencing and sacked from the police force. He was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years and 239 days in prison and will not be eligible for release until 2052. ==See also== *Wayne Couzens, another British police officer also serving on the Diplomatic Protection Squad who raped and murdered Sarah Everard in 2020. ==References== <references />
