Delwar Hossain Sayeedi
Delwar Hossain Syeedi (Feburary 2nd , 1940 - August 14 , 2023) is a Bangladashi Islamist politician and Muslim cleric. He is the Nayeb-e-Ameer or the Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami and was an elected member of the National Assembly of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2008. On February 28th 2013; he was convicted of crimes against humanity including murder, arson, looting, rape, and forcefully converting people to Islam during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war. The charges included that he assisted in the abduction and murder of Bangladeshi politicians; that he lead a death squad that participated in the genocide committed by the Pakistani government during the war and that he abducted and raped several women. On October 4th, 2011; he was indicted on 20 counts of crimes against humanity by the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal under the International Crimes (Tribunals) Act (1973). The tribunal has been strongly criticized by international observers. Sayeedi was sentenced to death for two of the charges. In September 2014, the Supreme Court commuted his sentence to life imprisonment.
