|
Gary Haggarty (1973) is the former leader of an Ulster Volunteer Force unit who was convicted of 202 terrorist offences, including five murders, and received almost no significant jail time, being sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison and never even serving one year before his release and admission to witness protection. However, in 2020 the court of appeal deemed his sentence to be too short and gave him a minimum tariff of ten years.

Among the five murders Haggarty was responsible for were Catholic workmen Gary Convie and Eamon Fox, who were shot dead in their van while they ate lunch in 1994. Also killed was builder Sean McDermott, who was abducted and killed by the UVF. Haggarty admitted involvement. He also beat a man named John Harbinson to death with a hammer on a separate occasion.
