~ Gunnar explaining why he killed Hannesi

Gunnar Rúnar Sigurþórsson (born March 15, 1987) is an Icelandic man who, on August 15th, 2010, killed his crush's fiancee, Hannesi Helgasyni. He was sentenced 16 years in prison in 2011, but was released in 2019.

Biography edit

Gunnar was born on March 15, 1987. At only the age of 9, he witnessed his father commit suicide by gunshot in front of him. In school, he fell in love with a girl named "Hildar". However, Hildar did not love her back, and only saw him as a friend, and later became engaged to a man named "Hannesi". Despite this, Gunnar still pursued Hildar, and hoped that she would change her mind. On March 25th, 2009, he uploaded a video to YouTube titled "Játning min til hildar", which in Icelandic translated to "My confession to Hildar". In the video, he openly confessed his love to Hildar. Hildar eventually saw the video and asked Gunnar to take it down, but he didn't.

One year later, on August 14th, Hildar was at a nightclub party, where Gunnar was also present. Both of them got drunk, and Hildar asked Gunnar to take her back to her and her fiancee's home. He did so, but instead of taking her back to her home, he took her to his home, where he carried her upstairs to his bed to let her sleep there while he slept on the couch. The next morning, Hildar woke up and was not happy at what Gunnar had done, and called a friend to pick her up and drive her home. When she arrived home, she found her fiancee's deceased body at the top of the staincase, naked and covered in blood. She then ran outside and asked her friend who took her home to call the police. When the police arrived, they found out that the man's body had been beaten and stabbed. They then questioned several people who knew him or were friends with him, including Gunnar.

It didn't take long for the police and media to find Gunnar's video uploaded a year prior to the murder, and they also found it suspicious that Gunnar took Hildar to his home instead of her home. On August 16th, he was arrested as a suspect. The police also searched Gunnar's car, and found traces of blood in the trunk. Gunnar was held in custody for a day, but was eventually released due to lack of evidence. However, he had left a bloody footprint at the scene of the crime, and the shoes he were wearing were so rare in Iceland, that the police were able to pinpoint them to him, and he was arrested again.

Eventually, after being unable to explain how the footprint got there, Gunnar confessed to the murder, and also revealed that he threw the murder weapon of a pier in Reykjavík, which was caught on CCTV. Gunnar believed that Hildar's relationship with Hannesi was unhappy, and he also told investigators that "he loved Hildar" and that she was "supposed to be with him, not Hannesi".

On March 1st, 2011, Gunnar was found not guilty by reason of insanity, and was to be sentenced to a mental institution. However, the prosecution appealed this decision, and, on October 13th of that same year, he was found guilty and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. However, in 2019, Gunnar was let out of prison. It was later revealed that he had created a Tinder account after his release. He currently lives in a halfway house under supervision and works in the clothing collection department of the Icelandic Red Cross.

His YouTube channel is still up as of January 2023, and can be viewed here.
