Augustus Alexander "Gus" Savage (October 30, 1925 – October 31, 2015) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Illinois.
He was a member of the Democratic Party who was controversial in his own district for being an anti-Semitic bigot. For this reason, he usually faced multiple opponents in the primary elections and never won by more than 52%. He also became even less unpopular after he was accused of trying to force himself on a female Peace Corps worker in the Republic of Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo), for which he wrote a letter of apology. He eventually lost the 1992 election to fellow Democratic politician Mel Reynolds, who he claimed was elected by racist Jews in typical Gus Savage fashion.
Savage died on October 31, 2015, one day after his 90th birthday, which he celebrated with his closest friends and family.
