Johann "Hans" Friedrich Asperger (18 February 1906 - 21 October 1980) was an Austrian scientist and medical theorist. Although chiefly remembered for his work on autist spectrum disorder (the form of autism known as "Asperger's syndrome" is named after him), Asperger's legacy has become controversial in recent years due to the revelation that he was involved in Action T4, an involuntary euthanasia program executed by the Nazi Party. Historian Herwig Czech discovered in 2018 that Asperger had cooperated with the Nazi eugenics program and had referred multiple disabled children to the Am Spiegelgrund killing centre in Vienna. According to Asperger himself, autistic patients deemed to be high-functioning were protected by him, as they were considered to be "gifted" and of use to the Reich; however, low-functioning autistics he sent to be killed at Am Spiegelgrund.
