Maria Imelda Josefa Remedios Romualdez Marcos (born November 12, 1955), nicknamed Imee is a Filipina politician who served as a Senator of the Philippines since 2019. She is the daughter of the late former president Ferdinand Marcos and former First Lady Imelda Marcos, and the older sister to Bongbong and Irene. She grew up in the Malacañang Palace.

History edit

Imee was born at Mandaluyong, Rizal, Philippines on November 12, 1955 to Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and Imelda Marcos, she is the firstborn child of the couple. She has two biological siblings: Bongbong and Irene and an adopted sister named Aimee.

During the the Martial Law in 1972, both Imee and her sister, Irene were studying overseas until they have finished their studies. Aside from politics, Imee was an actress and has involved in television shows.

She married golfer Tommy Manotoc in 1981 and had 3 children with him.

Politics edit

Imee began her politics since the Martial Law. She became a member of the Regular Batasang Pambansa from 1984 until 1986 and the chairwoman of Kabataang Barangay.

Imee was the governor of Ilocos Norte from June 30, 2010 until 2019 where she became the Senator of the Philippines as the Senator of Cultural Communities Committee. Her brother eventually became the 17th President of the Philippines on June 30, 2022.

On February 1986, her father was ousted during the EDSA Revolution, causing the Marcos family and their cronies to flee in exile. 2 years later after her father's death, President Corazon Aquino allowed the Marcos family to return to the Philippines to face charges for their crimes.

Controversies edit

Martial law denialism edit

Like all of the Marcos family, Imee has been heavily criticized for her denialism of the atrocities of her family during her father's regime. Such examples including her claims to be at "young age" to have powers by the time the human rights violations have occured or claiming that the youth have "moved on" to the era, making her remarks highly insensitive against those who have been tortured, killed, and abused during the martial law era.

Murder of Archimedes Trajano edit

Yes, Archimedes Trajano was tortured and killed but it's none of your business.
~ Imee about Archimedes Trajano's death.

Imee is mostly linked to the death of Archimedes Trajano, a 21-year old student from Mapua Institute of Technology.

On August 31, 1977, Archimedes attended the open forum with Imee who was also 21 at the time. Her father appointed her as the National Chariman of the Kabataang Barangay. Trajano questions her appointment, she became infuriated. Imee's guards seized Trajano to be dragged outside, where he was tortured and beaten to death. His lifeless body was later found hours later.

In 1986, Trajano's mother, Agapita pressed indictment against Imee for the death of her son due to false imprisonment, kidnapping, wrongful death, and deprivation of rights. Marcos and her lawyers did not deny the claims and stated that the soldiers who killed Trajano were "immune from suit in a foreign state." Agapita won the case in the Honolulu district, with a $2.5 million being awarded in punitive charges, $1.25 million for mental anguish, and $246k for legal fees against Imee and her bodyguards.

Imee then responded that he was actually tortured but it's none of their business.

Misuse of tobacco excise tax funds edit

On May 2017, an investigation was held by the House of Representatives due to the alleged misuse of Tobacco Excise Tax funds in Ilocos Norte. On 2018, after being released, the accussed admitted of gaining access to the funds to pay around 70 mini-trucks as well as acknowledging the signatures on the documents, despite initially denying the allegations. Three different transactions were found regarding the misuse of funds via cash advancement: 40 units of mini-cab costing 18.6 million pesos on December 2011, 15.3 million pesos worth of secondhand buses, and 70 units of mini-truck which costs around 32.55 million pesos. Three different signed ordinances of the funds were set aside for Imee's pet project which was allocated for a total of 213 million pesos.

The investigations also stated that the purchased vehicles were overpriced to 21.45 million pesos. The contractor who sold the vehicles in question was none other than Mark Chua, Imee's girlfriend. The vehicles were also lacking registrations from the Land Transportation Office.

Eight people including Imee were investigated and the House Committee on Good Governance recommends the indictment against the people involved. The Ombudsman then initiated its own "fact-finding" to determine if enough cause was found, a formal investigation will be opened. Although there are two previous controversies regarding the Tobacco excise tax funds which involves both Ilocos Sur officials and Joseph Estrada.

Educational background edit

Similarly to her brother, Imee Marcos' education is a controversial background, specifically during the 2019 Philippine general elections. She would claim that she graduated with honors at Princeton University, which was eventually debunked by the media. After staying at Princeton, she would attend at the University of the Philippines College of Law where she failed to meet the normal requirements of having a college degree. Professor Madrileña de la Cerna, a professor from UP Cebu stated that she did that take 35 units worth of courses at the time she was supposed to graduate. Poltical pressure happened, thus forcing her to graduate in spite of the other professors refusing her graduation.

During the University of the Philippines graduation held at Meralco Theatre on 1983, Imee was present in the ceremony as she was being honored with a magna cum laude despite never having graduated. This was due to the fact that her parents ruled the country as dictators and pushed her ceremony.

Imee also claimed that she earned a Master in Management degree at Asian Institute of Management. The claim was refuted on March 2019.
