Ioan "John" Balaban is a serial killer who confessed to murdering five people in France and Australia. Balaban was responsible for a series of murders from 1948 until his execution on August 26, 1953.
On February 22, 1948, he was responsible for the murder of 32-year-old Polish woman Riva Kwas. The murder went completely unresolved until he was caught and detained in April 1953, where it is revealed that Balaban strangled her after she refused to have an affair with him. He later fled France after the murder and immigrated to Australia in January 1951.
Later in 1952, he mutilated Yugoslavian woman Zora Kusic, who was slashed and killed on her bed on December 5, 1952. He later killed his wife, her son, and mother in April 1953. Balaban was later arrested after the murders of his family, where he confessed to the previous two murders of Kwas and Kusic. He was eventually executed by hanging on August 26, 1953.
