May 15 Incident

The May 15 Incident is an assassination that occurred in connection with the Great Depression, with the goal of establishing a military government. The assassination, carried out by a young officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy, they also triggered the February 25 Incident from a later court ruling.

Biography

Initially, when Charles Chaplin was visiting Japan, the young officers tried to build momentum for war with the powers by killing him. By doing so, they hoped to establish a military government and bring Japan out of the Great Depression. However, the driver accompanying Charles Chaplin made avert this. Navy then was abandoned the assassination of Charles Chaplin, and triggered a coup d'etat by killing the then Prime Minister, Tsuyoshi Inukai.

On May 15, the Navy attacked the Prime Minister's residence where Tsuyoshi Inukai was staying and killed Inukai, who tried to persuade the Navy that he would understand if he talked to them, but they replied, "Don't ask questions".

They were then tried by court-martial, but a campaign by other officers to save the lives of the accused officers resulted in a light sentence for the officers. This decision would later lead to the February 25 Incident.
