Mohammad Najibulá (Gardīz, August 1, 6, 1947 - Kabul, September 27, 1996), also known as Dr. Najib, was an Afghan doctor and politician, ruler of the country between 1986 and 1992.

During the War of Afghanistan (1978-1992) he was promoted to Director of the JAD, Afghan equivalent of the KGB, in 1986 he became secretary of the Party, and shortly thereafter as president of the Republic (1987-1992).

During his tenure the Soviets withdrew their occupation troops, although they continued to support their regime economically and militarily. That is why his policy was oriented to the so-called "National Reconciliation", which sought to end the Civil War through negotiations and concessions to the Mujahideen, to whom he granted amnesties for his crimes. Similarly, the new Constitution of 1990 turned the country into an Islamic state, erasing all references to communism hitherto prevailing.

However, the dissolution of the USSR, on whose support its government depended entirely, as well as the support of the United States for Islamic fundamentalists, led to the collapse of the regime and its overthrow.

After a failed attempt to flee to India, Najibullah remained in Kabul living at the United Nations headquarters until 1996, when the Taliban movement took Kabul. The Taliban kidnapped Najibullah and his brother in UN custody at dawn on September 27.

Since then, he lived in asylum at the UN headquarters in Kabul until in 1996 the Taliban broke into the Afghan capital, castrating and killing him publicly.
